Tanzanite comes from the mineral zoisite which was discovered in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro and therefore earns its name from the east African state of Tanzania.
It’s recognisable by its striking blue or violet colour. It is a gemstone used purely for jewellery as it has quite a soft quality, 
ideal for delicate jewellery such as rings but less suitable for industrial uses. 
It is considered a geological phenomenon as it is found in one location worldwide and as a result is a very rare and often expensive gemstone.
